Global Citizenship stimuli

4 examples of Global Citizenship stimuli for philosophical enquiry

Within the project, a large variety of Global Citizenship topics were trialed, with varying degrees of success. Here are our suggestions of some of the more successful activities, using a range of stimuli, from stories, to practical activities, to games and pictures. We've also given you an example of a philosophical question that the students came up with in response to these stimuli to give you a taste of what's possible to achieve!

Just click on the topics below!

1. Local community 2. UK Diversity 3. Refugees 4. Fair Trade

1. Local community

Make a video depicting the student's likes and dislikes about their local community. Enabling the students to generate stimuli themselves meant that they were particularly engaged.

Example question generated by students: 'Do we have the power to change the things we dislike?'

2. UK Diversity

Suggested resource:
Lancashire - Cumbria photo pack

Show lots of different photos and ask the group which ones they think were taken in the UK. When they have made their guesses, reveal that all of the pictures were in fact taken in the UK. The photos should consist of pictures that the students wouldn't immediately associate with the UK, such as the Notting Hill Carnival, a dried up reservoir, black students, a warehouse of African food and a tent.

Example question generated by students: 'Do negative images of this country generate racism?'

3. Refugees

Suggested website : Newsround

Read together as a group a real-life refugee story of a young person forced to escape his/her home country and settle in Britain.

Example question generated by students: 'How would you feel if you were an asylum seeker in another country?'

4. Fair Trade

Suggested resource: Comic Relief PaPaPaa Pack

Play the Chocolate bar activity, in which the group are asked to divide up a chocolate bar in relation to how much manufacturers, shopkeepers and cocoa growers receive from the sale of a bar.

Example question generated by students: 'Does the grower get enough for the hard work they put in?'
